How to Prevent Cavities While Wearing Braces
Braces make it easier for food and plaque to hide in places your toothbrush may miss. That does not mean cavities are a sure thing. It means your daily routine needs a little more attention, a little more time, and the right tools.
The good news is that healthy teeth and straight teeth can happen at the same time. Brackets, wires, and bands do not cause cavities by themselves. Plaque does. When plaque sits around braces, it feeds on sugars and starches from food and drinks. That process creates acids that can weaken enamel and lead to cavities or white spots.
With a few smart habits, you can protect your smile throughout orthodontic treatment. This guide is for general education and is not a substitute for personalized dental or orthodontic care.
Why braces raise the risk of cavities
Braces add more surfaces to clean. A smooth tooth is fairly simple to brush. A tooth with a bracket, wire, and elastic tie has more corners where plaque can collect.
The most common trouble spots are:
Around the edges of brackets
Under the archwire
Along the gumline
Between the teeth
Around molar bands, if those are part of treatment
If plaque stays on enamel too long, the first visible sign may be a chalky white mark near a bracket. These spots are areas where minerals have been pulled from the enamel. They may become permanent if they are not addressed early.
Cavities can also form between teeth, especially when flossing becomes harder during braces. That is why brushing alone is not enough. A complete routine matters.
The goal is simple: remove plaque before it has time to damage your teeth.
