Do Braces Hurt? What Dallas Patients Should Expect

If you’re thinking about getting braces — or your child is about to start treatment — one of the most common questions you probably have is:👉 “Do braces hurt?”
At Gupta Smile Studio – Orthodontics in Oak Cliff, Dallas, we hear this every week, and the short answer is: braces don’t hurt, but your mouth might feel a little sore at first.
Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after getting braces — plus a few tips to make the process smooth and comfortable.
🦷 Do Braces Hurt When They’re Put On?
Good news — getting braces placed does not hurt!During your appointment, we gently attach the brackets to your teeth and thread a light archwire through them. The entire process usually takes about an hour, and you’ll be able to eat and talk normally afterward.
You might feel some tightness later that day or the next morning as your teeth begin adjusting, but that’s a sign they’re starting to move — and that your treatment is working!
⏳ What About the First Few Days After Braces?
It’s common to experience mild soreness or tenderness for a few days after getting braces or after each adjustment. This feeling is similar to how muscles feel after a good workout — temporary and manageable.
Here’s what can help during those first few days:
Stick to soft foods (mac & cheese, smoothies, mashed potatoes, soups)
Rinse with warm salt water to soothe gums
Use an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
Apply orthodontic wax if a bracket or wire rubs your cheek
Most patients tell us the tenderness goes away in just 3–5 days.
😁 Does Invisalign Hurt Less Than Braces?
Yes — Invisalign® aligners are known for being gentler since they use smooth, removable trays instead of brackets and wires. You may feel light pressure when you switch to a new set of aligners, but that usually fades within 24–48 hours.
At Gupta Smile Studio, we offer both braces and Invisalign, so we’ll help you decide which is the most comfortable and effective option for your smile.
🧑⚕️ What About Tightening Appointments?
During your checkups (usually every 6–8 weeks), we may make small adjustments to your braces or wire. You might feel a little pressure for a day or two afterward, but it’s nothing major.
We’ll always make sure you’re comfortable before you leave the office and give you tips to minimize any soreness at home.
🍦 Foods That Help When Your Mouth Feels Sore
Here are a few Dallas-friendly comfort foods that are gentle on braces:
Smoothies and acai bowls
Soft tacos or burritos
Mashed potatoes and mac & cheese
Yogurt and pudding cups
Ice cream or frozen yogurt (a cold treat always helps!)
Avoid crunchy chips, popcorn, or sticky candies during the first week.
💬 The Truth: Braces Discomfort Is Temporary, but the Results Last Forever
It’s completely normal to have mild soreness as your teeth adjust, but it doesn’t last long — and the payoff is a confident, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
At Gupta Smile Studio in Oak Cliff, we make the process as easy as possible with:
A gentle, caring team that treats every patient like family
