A Parent’s Guide to Handling Common Braces Emergencies
Braces are designed to be strong and durable, but accidents can happen. A loose bracket, poking wire, or broken appliance can be frustrating—especially if it happens on a weekend, during a vacation, or after office hours.
The good news is that most orthodontic emergencies are not true emergencies and can be managed at home until you can visit your orthodontist.
At Gupta Smile Studio Orthodontics, we want our patients and parents to feel prepared and confident if a bracket or wire breaks.
First: Stay Calm
A broken bracket or wire may feel alarming, but in most cases it does not require immediate treatment.
The most important thing is to determine:
Is your child in pain?
Is a wire poking the cheek or gums?
Is the bracket still attached to the wire?
Has any part of the appliance come completely loose?
Once you identify the issue, there are often simple steps you can take at home.
If a Bracket Becomes Loose
Brackets can occasionally loosen from the tooth, especially after eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods.
Common causes include:
Ice
Popcorn kernels
Hard candy
Nuts
Sticky candy
Chewing on pens or fingernails
What to Do
If the bracket is still attached to the wire:
Leave it in place.
Avoid touching or twisting it.
Continue brushing carefully.
Call the office to schedule a repair appointment.
If the bracket rotates or causes irritation:
Cover it with orthodontic wax.
Avoid playing with it using your tongue or fingers.
If a Wire Is Poking the Cheek or Gums
As teeth move during treatment, wires can occasionally shift and begin irritating the inside of the mouth.
What to Do
Try one of the following:
Apply orthodontic wax over the end of the wire.
Use a clean cotton swab to gently push the wire away from the irritated area.
Rinse with warm salt water to soothe the tissue.
These steps often provide temporary relief until your appointment.
If a Wire Comes Out of a Bracket
Sometimes the archwire slips out of one or more brackets.
What to Do
If possible:
Use clean tweezers to gently guide the wire back into place.
Apply orthodontic wax if the wire is causing discomfort.
Contact the office for further instructions.
Do not force the wire if it does not move easily.
If a Wire Is Extremely Long and Causing Pain
In some cases, a wire may extend far enough to cause significant irritation.
What to Do
Place orthodontic wax over the area first.
Contact our office for guidance.
If instructed by your orthodontist, a clean nail clipper or small wire cutter may occasionally be used to trim a protruding wire. However, this should only be done carefully and when specifically recommended.
If a Rubber Band or Elastic Comes Off
Elastics are an important part of many orthodontic treatment plans.
What to Do
Replace the elastic if you have extras.
Follow the instructions provided by your orthodontist.
Contact the office if you are unsure how to replace it.
Missing elastics for several days can delay treatment progress.
If a Braces Emergency Happens While Traveling
Traveling with braces doesn't have to be stressful.
We recommend packing:
Orthodontic wax
Extra elastics (if prescribed)
A small mirror
Tweezers
A travel toothbrush
These simple items can help manage most minor issues until you return home.
When Should You Call the Orthodontist?
You should contact your orthodontist if:
A bracket comes completely off.
A wire is causing significant pain.
You cannot eat comfortably.
An appliance breaks.
You are unsure how to handle the situation.
Our team can help determine whether you need to be seen immediately or if the issue can wait until your next appointment.
How to Prevent Broken Brackets and Wires
The best way to avoid orthodontic emergencies is to follow your care instructions carefully.
Try to avoid:
Ice
Hard candy
Popcorn kernels
Nuts
Sticky candy
Chewing on pens
Biting fingernails
In addition, always wear any prescribed appliances or elastics as directed.
